Rights Respecting

Our school is on a Rights Respecting Schools journey!

We have achieved our Silver Award.

What is a Rights Respecting School?

A Rights Respecting School, supported by UNICEF, is a place where both children and adults work together to create a community that understands, values, and upholds children's rights. These rights are learnt, taught, practised, respected, and promoted every day by everyone in the school community.

At the heart of a Rights Respecting School is the commitment to putting children first. UNICEF collaborates with schools to provide a safe, supportive, and happy environment where children’s abilities are nurtured, and they can thrive. Through the Rights Respecting Schools Award, schools like ours aim to give children the best opportunities to lead happy, healthy lives and become responsible, active citizens. We also encourage children to understand their role in the wider world, preparing them to be global citizens and to respect the rights of others.

By fostering an environment where children’s voices are heard, and relationships are positive, Rights Respecting Schools create a welcoming atmosphere where children enjoy learning. Learning about their rights and the challenges faced by other children around the world helps them appreciate their education and the importance of their own rights.

United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child (UNCRC)- What Is It?

The UNCRC is a list of rights that every child and young person is entitled to, regardless of who they are, where they live, or what they believe. It includes 54 articles covering all aspects of a child’s life and outlines the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights that must be protected for all children globally.

The UNCRC also highlights the responsibilities of adults and governments in ensuring these rights are upheld. This collective effort helps ensure that every child can fully enjoy their rights.

Class Charters

At Wembley Primary , each class creates a Class Charter based on specific articles from the UNCRC. The children actively take part in selecting the articles that are most meaningful to them and agree on how these will guide the class community.

The chosen rights are displayed in language that is easy for children to understand, but they remain firmly based on the UNCRC. The charter also includes agreements about how children will work together to respect these rights and what adults (duty bearers) will do to ensure these rights are upheld.

Both children and adults sign the charter in a symbolic way, such as adding their name, photo, or a personal symbol. The charter is revisited regularly throughout the year, ensuring that the right it represents remain central to classroom life and that every child’s rights are respected and fulfilled.

Rights Ambassadors

This role is advertised to all children, who then have the opportunity to apply or vote for the candidate they believe is best suited for the position. Rights Ambassadors play a key role in ensuring that children’s rights are represented and upheld throughout the school.

Our Rights Respecting Steering Group, also known as the RRSA Ambassadors, is made up of children from across the school. Their main responsibility is to promote awareness of the rights outlined in the UNCRC among all members of our school community. They also work to ensure that our school respects the rights of others, helping to make it a happier, safer, and more respectful place for everyone to learn and work.
